I knew it!!!

Recently, I have been trying to keep track of the calories I eat and burn with this app on my phone called myfitnesspal. On it, they don't have bjj as an exercise. But they do have wrestling. So, I put in 45 min of wrestling to see how many calories it said someone at my weight would burn. I chose 45 minutes because you're not grappling the entire 90 minutes. It said for 45 min of it was only 273 calories!!!

I think this is wrong! So, I looked up online to see other opinions. I saw various things from around 500 calories an hour and upwards. I never saw anything as low as 273. But I founds this video and thought it was interesting.

What is you take on this? How many calories do you think you burn in a 90 minute class of bjj?

OMGOMGOMG!

Here's what I want to know--
#min in warmup and what do they do
#min in technique
#min rolling and was it consistent, like 5 min matches over and over, or sitting and resting between?

BETTER YET-- I wanna Polar monitor, and I'll do some serious testing!

Dang, now I want a brownie :)

Calories don't work. They are old old old science measured in isolation.

Olympic level swimmers eat 12,000 kcalories a day. A DAY! How many hours would a 70kg person need to spend training to burn off 12,000 kcal? Can someone work it out and tell? :)

Using MyFitnessPal I built three types of 90 minute classes using a mix of jogging, walking atva brisk pace and BJJ. It calculated 900 for a "light" Class, 1100 for a "typical" class and 1300 for a dreaded "hard" class. This video suggests the estimates were pretty close.

BTW...shout out to New Orleans' very own Cowboy Mouth for Voodoo Shop on that clip!

I had that same issue when I used daily plate. They only had martial arts and it was something crazy like 1200 calories an hour. I used to just guess at 400 and adjust the time from there.

The more muscle mass you have the more calories you will burn. For a light to moderate BJJ workout at normal room temperature, a tiny person like me (112 lbs) will burn about 560 calories an hour. A lean 200 lb man will burn about 1000 calories an hour. That works out to 5 calories and hour per pound of body weight. If you increase the temperture, humidity and/or intensity, your caloric demands increase dramatically. There is some science in there some where, I just can't remember where the information came from... I'm full of useless trivia with no origins to note. ;-)
